Millbrook Monster 2013

The next race in the Championship, the Millbrook Monster, was run by Adele Tayles, Steve Perren, Christian Lloyd, Jeff Miller and Nick Thompson. Congratulations to Adele Tayles who won the FV45 category.

The weather was terrible on the drive over to Stalybridge, low cloud after an afternoon of torrential rain meant a soggy race was inevitable. However, the weather gods were smiling upon us and it was dry at the start line and all Meltham runners congregated to discuss tactics and what our predicted times were. Some said they were hoping just to get round whilst others had a specific time in mind based on last year or similar courses.

Then we were off, up the hill and then up some more, with an occasional bit of flat to keep us motivated. Then at 2km the climbing was relentless, from 200m elevation up to 375m negotiating rocky paths and tracks. The only chance of rest was if you were lucky enough to have people queuing up in front of you at the stile.

There was a rocky descent down to the well-earned drinks station at Lower Swineshaw Reservoir. 5km to go and a change of terrain meant there was a fast tarmac descent back down to 150m elevation and back into civilisation.

Through numerous puddles and groups of cheering spectators we saw the 2km to go sign – but the worst was still to come. On tired legs we had to negotiate “The Steps” through the woods (which were described by many as evil). At last, the 400m to go marshall assured us she was telling the truth and a nice downhill finish was ahead of us.

The last Meltham runner was in and then it was off to the chippy for our well earned free chip butty. Christian declined his after suffering from a stitch for most of the run after his “onion ring revenge” and Steve was a little reluctant to hand in his running number in exchange for his chip butty. But we all stood outside, chip butties in hand swapping war stories about the evening.

Summer Handicap 2013

Well done to everyone participating in the Summer Handicap last night.

A good win for Richard Beaumont followed closely by Mark Hoath and Dan Wilkinson. Very kind of Jeff to let them take the honours, but by all accounts he made them work hard for it!

There was a good battle for 7th place with only 30 seconds separating Nick Thomson, Giles, John, Adele, Susi and Gilly.

A brief respite for the timers before the busiest minute of the night as Helen held off 11 other runners including Andy Whitworth, fastest runner of the night. Well done Helen – it must have felt like you were being chased by half of Huddersfield.

Well done also to Amanda who held an alternative run but managed to find her way back eventually!

Thanks to Graham and Wendy for doing the timings – especially that 17th minute.

Thanks to Graeme Lee for sorting out the handicaps, always a tricky job.

Sunday breakfast run in Marsden

Continuing our social runs through the year, today, Sunday 14th July, we changed our Sunday run to a run from Marsden up to the Pennine Way and around the Wessenden reservoirs.  The weather which was uncharacteristically warm and sunny gave great views of the moors. After the run we stopped off for a bacon sandwich and coffee. Come all and join the run sometime.

Upcoming championship events

We have had a couple of members ask about up some of the championship events coming up. In particular the Idle Trail race, which has now been cancelled this year and replaced by The Millbrook Monster 10k on Wednesday 31st July at 7:30. Click here to enter.

I have also had a lot of questions about the Keswick Trail Race as there are three events on the same day. The event to enter is the 15K challenge and it can be found here. If you want to enter the 15k race that will also count to championship points as it covers the same course but sets off an hour later. Be quick though as of 2/7/13 there are only 89 places left so get yours booked.

The Wall

Two entreped and rather daft Meltham runners, ran “The Wall” race on Saturday 22nd June. The course is 69 miles from Carlisle Castle to The Millenium Bridge in Newcastle along the course of Hadrians Wall, with a time limit of 24 hours to complete. Nick Thompson ran the distance in 16:05:39 and Andy Lang in 14:55:20. There was a mixture of terrian with roads and trail running plus a mixture of weather with rain showers in the morning and hot sunshine in the afternoon.
